Watch Dita Von Teese in the 3D Printed Gown (VIDEO)

Back in March 2013 we revealed the 3D Printed gown for Dita Von Teese designed by Michael Schmidt and Francis Bitonti at the Ace Hotel in NYC. Now we finally have footage of the gown in action.

New Zealand Based Designer’s XYZ Shoe Mixes 3D Printing & Traditional Materials

New Zealand based designer and Shapeways user Earl Stewart has designed the XYZ Shoe using a combination of 3D Printed Nylon and traditional shoe making materials such as leather and laces.

We have seen a number of 3D printed shoes hit the runway along with a few prototype sports shoes from Nike and New Balance but these are the first to use 3D printing in a more traditional, wearable style, and for men.

Our new Elasto Plastic may be the perfect material to usher in a new range of 3D printed and/or partially 3D printed shoes into the market.

Check out Earl’s impressive portfolio featuring additional 3D printed footwear experiments and more.

Shapeways 3D Printing Enabling Everything Forever

Ok, it may sound like a grand statement, but it is true. The Everything Forever Belt by Katie Gallagher.

Katie Gallagher collaborated with Francis Bitonti Studio put 3D printed stainless steel belts on the runway for her spring/summer 2013 collection. A new version of the belt is now available through the Katie by Katie Gallagher diffusion line.

If you have an idea for a design but do not have the 3D modeling skills (yet), you can find a Designer for Hire like Francis Bitonti to help you design and 3D print anything, forever.

Introducing Premium Silver 3D Printing to Shapeways

We have just raised the bar for Silver 3D printing at Shapeways with the introduction of Premium Silver.

Premium Silver is our 3D printed Sterling Silver taken to the next level with an incredibly smooth, glossy surface to give your designs a truly professional finish. We will be offering Premium Silver for a six week trial until Tuesday May the 14th, during which we will assess the pricing and design rules. If you love this new finish as much as we already do, we will keep it as a permanent material option on Shapeways.

It is really important to note that we get this amazing finish on the Premium Silver with manual polishing that may result in very fine details being polished away.  If your design has sharp corners these will be polished to a smoother, rounder edge.  If your design has very fine engraving or embossing, these details may be polished out.  As we progress through the trial we will have a better idea exactly what level of detail will succeed and we will update the design rules and guidelines accordingly.

As with other precious metals, the polished surface of silver is soft, so scrapes and scratches are to be expected as a normal part of wear. To minimize damage and ensure your product lasts a lifetime, we recommend storing your jewelry or other Silver products in a soft cloth pouch and away from other products. Avoid exposing the product to household chemicals during cleaning as they can be damaging to the finish. Silver tarnishes with time, use a silver polishing kit to maintain a glossy surface.

Revealing Dita Von Teese in a Fully Articulated 3D Printed Gown

Last night at the Ace Hotel in New York to a crowd of uber-cool fashonistas and paparazzi we revealed the 3D printed gown designed by Michael Schmidt and Francis Bitonti modeled by queen of burlesque Dita Von Teese.

The fully articulated gown based on the Fibonacci sequence was designed by Michael Schmidt and 3D modeled by computational designer Francis Bitonti to be 3D printed in Nylon by Shapeways.  The gown was assembled from 17 pieces, dyed black, lacquered and adorned with over 13,000 Swarovski crystals to create a sensual flowing form.

Beautiful Hand Dyed 3D Printed Jewelry

3D Printing is not only about mouse clicks and lasers, there is also a lot of hands-on work required to take an item from bits to atoms, that is why we are always looking for talented people to help make things real in our Eindhoven and New York offices.  Every model is lovingly removed from the various 3D printers, cleaned (sometimes dyed) and shipped around the world.  We do not always get to see what you then do to the parts, what post processing you undertake to make them even more beautiful, but when we do, it inspires us and makes all of the long hours worthwhile.

We recently featured Rachel Goth’s work on the Shapeways blog but I thought it was worth taking another look based purely on the dying of the products that make her Marmalade Park designs look amazing.  Here are some images from her Flickr account to inspire you.

Join Shapeways to Discuss Fashion Innovations in 3D Printing at Eyebeam in NYC

As we see more and more fashion designers like Kimberly Ovitz embrace 3D printing as a way to take their designs direct to market we need to discuss what directions are most suitable to be explored in 3D printing fashion.  Jewelry is an easy win when we can 3D print items in materials such as Stainless Steel and Sterling Silver but we are also seeing more and more textile like geometries being 3D printed in Nylon to create digital fabrics

Eyebeam in New York City is hosting a panel discussion on Fashion Innovations in 3D Printing on the 27th of February to explore the intersection between fashion and 3D printing highlighting collaborations between fashion designers, technologists and manufacturers such as Shapeways.

As part of the Computational Fashion program series, Eyebeam presents an exciting event featuring designers and producers using cutting edge 3D printing techniques to push the boundaries of fashion. From the runway to the DIY hackerspace, 3D printing and rapid prototyping have become an increasingly popular and accessible way to produce objects that are both highly complex and easily replicable.

This friday we celebrate fashion week in NYC which saw Shapeways 3D Printed jewelry hit the runway as part of the latest Kimberly Ovitz Collection which is now available exclusively via Shapeways. We are also about to unveil and amazing fully 3D printed dress designed by Michael Schmidt with the expert assistance of Francis Bitonti who transformed Michael’s concept into a fully articulated 3D form that is to be worn by Dita Von Teese at the uber-cool Ace Hotel.

Luckily you do not have to be in New York to get cutting edge 3D printed fashion as it is already available on Shapeways.

3D Printed Strvct Shoes by Continuum Fashion Now Available

They brought you the first 3D Printed Bikini, now Continuum Fashion have released the Strvct 3D printed shoe, lined with a patent leather inner sole and coated with a synthetic rubber to provide greater traction.

strvct refers to structure. With 3D printed nylon, delicate looking forms are actually incredibly strong while also being impossibly lightweight. We present a triangulated spin on the classic wedge pump, which brings to mind Cinderella’s glass slipper in its transparency. Expanding on this idea, we created a sandal with a 3D printed base and origami tyvek butterflies

Yet another interesting Kickstarter project with a little 3D Printed love in it’s heart is CONSTRVCT by Continuum Fashion of the 3D Printed N12 Bikini fame.

Exoskeleton Shoe : Dragon Skulls, Footwear, 3D Printing and a Commission from the Shapeways Forum

The Exoskeleton Shoe is a concept designed by Janina Alleyne & modeled by INNER | LEAF. Janina Alleyne is a very talented Fashion Design Student at De Montfort University in the UK. After requesting in the Shapeways forum for a 3D modeler, INNER | LEAF were delighted to win the commission to model one of her designs. So impressed with the first model, Janina commissioned INNER | LEAF to do her entire range which included 3 shoes and a Hat.

We are seeing the number of the requests for 3D modelers increase every month to the point that a few of the Shapeways community members are getting a regular income stream from their 3D modeling skills. If you have some design skills you would like to offer for hire you can offer your services in the Shapeways forums so that people who are looking to hire a 3D designer can find you and some of your work.  Many people want to 3D Print their ideas whether they be art, fashion, jewelry, products and architecture, sometime they just need a little help…
