As you might have heard, Shapeways headquarters in NYC and our website have been impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Though we always try to push the limits of what is humanly possible, unfortunately the storm that has left half of Manhattan in the dark has hit us as well. Our headquarters are located at Park Avenue and 28th Street and our servers are located in the Financial District, both of which are currently cut off from power. Here’s a brief update on the Shapeways team, our facilities, and what this means for you.
Shapeways Team is Safe. The most important news we can share is that the whole Shapeways NY team is safe. Many remain without power and water, and a few are unfortunately repairing damaged homes. But the team is working together to help everyone get life back to normal as quickly as possible. Thanks so much for the kind notes and messages — it really helps to know we’re in this together.
Our Website is Currently Down. Earlier this morning, we were informed that due to an auxiliary electrical failure, power systems have failed at our internet service provider in New York City. As a result, www.Shapeways.com servers, services, and internal systems are offline.
Mayor Bloomberg and New York City’s energy provider Con Edison say that power could be restored to our primary data center within 4 days (follow official updates here: Mayor Bloomberg & ConEd). We are working to restore www.Shapeways.com to full service as quickly as we can, and hopefully faster than expected. We’re currently investigating all alternatives and creative solutions to getting our website up and running ASAP.
Our Factory of the Future in Long Island City is Unscathed. We’re happy to report that our NYC Factory of the Future is untouched by the storm. Machines are powered back on, compressors have started pumping, and the team is focused on preparing for business as usual.
Update on Outstanding Orders & Shipments. We are doing everything possible to prevent Hurricane Sandy from also affecting your Shapeways experience. Given that we cannot process orders per usual in both our NYC and Eindhoven factories, and that shipments at our NYC distribution center are currently halted, we ask that you please bear with us as your orders might be delayed by several days. As soon as our services are online, we will be 3D Printing and shipping your custom products as quickly as possible.
You will be the first to know once we have more news about our website and your orders. In the meantime, you can follow updates on our twitter feed and on here on Tumblr.
Thanks so much for your patience as we bring www.Shapeways.com and all of our operations back online.
As always, happy shaping.
